HW: Savor your weekend.

It was finally sixth period on a Friday! Yes, what a relief. Students filed into the classroom, took their seats, and started writing down the agenda. Some students were back from a field trip, while others were just winding down another week of school. Only 11 weeks left, eighth graders!

We took a minute, and I reminded a few students to really try to do just one thing at a time, which ended up being a reminder to myself. This got me really focused on my thoughts and feelings and, to my surprise, I got a little teary. I had just been thinking of my Dad and how I want to spend time with him this summer :).

Next, I wished Olivia a belated birthday, and then she read the blog for last Wednesday, because she was absent yesterday. Then, to my surprise, she chose me to be the blogger for today. Sigh. Well, here I am. There are worse ways to spend the day.

We got a point for Olivia's excellent blog, and then students moved into literature circles. I checked reading journals for the past few weeks while students read and discussed their books.

While grading reading journals, Jade informed me that Mamma Pig is pregnant!

It was Friday, so students took most of the rest of the period to complete the quiz and then to work on their research of Black authors. Some students switched the person they wanted to learn about. Before we all knew it, sixth period had flown by, and it was time to weekend!!!

Students packed up, put chairs on tables, and waited for the bell to ring. I hope we all managed to savor the weekend even more than usual.

Reader's workshop ᐧ Lit Circles

HW - RJ 8.3 Lit. Circle Books 14 iReady Lessons

We started off our day by writing down the agenda and listening to the end of our take a minute. Directly after that, Angel read his blog and chose to spin a wheel. I was chosen to write. We all got our notebooks and finished off our weeks G ᐧ Q ᐧ Q ᐧ L with the lines of the week. We read, listened, and annotated "AIN'T I A WOMAN?" by Sojourner Truth. Something I noticed as I annotated was the repetition of the line, "Ain't I a woman?" Afterwards, we moved into our literature circles. We wrote our predictions for each of our books and began to read for ten minutes. Once we were done with our literature circles, we packed up, put up our chairs, and waited for Ms. Nakada to dismiss us.

As the last period began, we settled into our seats and began writing the agendas in our planner. While we wrote in our planners, Ms. Nakada played the take a minute. The take a minute discussed sadness, and how you're not alone when you are sad. Afterwards, Hunter read his blog and Ms. Nakada polished it. Then, Ms. Nakada passed out this week's lines. During this, Hunter spun a wheel with my name 30 times, along with the rest of the class. I obviously got chosen. After we were done cutting and gluing our lines into our journals, Ms. Nakada read them to the class and explained the meanings behind them. The first poem was about breaking rules, and having a crush on a girl of the same race. The second poem was about someone who loved his friend, but went away in the end. Then, we got into our literature circles. Lastly, Ms. Nakada told us to pack up and we waited to be dismissed.

    DUE   TUESDAY    2/18!

We started off the day by watching our daily human conditions video, and talking about how all of us humans share these conditions. Then, Ms. Nakada called Andrew up to read his blog, he added me ten times, and spun the wheel, it landed on me, and I went up to write. Ms. Nakada started to have us write down our G.Q.Q.L's, we talked about connotation's and denotation's. She told us how Kendrick Lamar during the half time show used connotation's during the song, and with the scenery on stage.

We wrote down the quote "People spend their whole lives looking for love. Poems and songs and entire novels are written about it. But how can you trust something that can end as soon as it begins ?" - By Nicola Yoon.

We got into our question which stated, Can you make someone fall in love? And we decided that its not likely to happen, but if you form a genuine connection, it can be possible. We ended our day by getting in to our circle groups, and we made our predictions and read before Ms. Nakada dismissed us.
